Thursday, Aug.28 LAT & sNYT

Here are the solutions to yesterday's clues:

Famous 21st century poetess | in pre-Columbian Central America (4)
[MAYA {Angelou}] = [MAYA]

Mensa | is for splitting | hairs (5)
[MENSA] [anagram] = [MANES]
"Is for splitting" is a sort of iffy anagram indicator, but it fit the surface so well I decided to go with it anyway.

The three selections from the Seattle Times were the day's theme entries, which may have helped with the clumsy clues.

Help | in | rocks | the French | want | for two sides to be equal (9)
[SOS] [inside] [ICE] [LES] [=] [ISOSCELES]

Unbalanced, Triangles | of | Pascal energetically | reveal odds (7)
[SCALENE] [=] [paSCAL ENErgetically] [hidden]
"Odds" doesn't fit too well as part of the indicator for the wordplay. But the mathematically inclined may recognize that Pascal's Triangle is a method of calculating probabilities.

Four horsey heads | afterwards | back | the French | bid for | Trinitarian equality (11)
[EQUIne] [LATER] [reverse] [LA] [=] [EQUILATERAL {triangle}]
Although usually used in a religious sense, "trinitarian" can refer to anything with three parts.

At the head of Dixie, rebels angry with Lee would make a lengthy speech (5)

Agency to domestically investigate the initialism (3,3)

Two from Seattle Times:

Heart's desires wrapped in crinkly velour set (4,5)

Lack of agreement discovered between anode alignments (2,4)

3 comments:

  1. My set. Déjà vu, all over again.

Are they spoken and heard? (5)

Off the table when a libertarian start leaves shooting locations at the forefront (2,4)

  2. Two minor corrections:

Off the table when a libertarian start leaves shooting location at the forefront (2,4)

He steals first base, but an internal review leads me to outside agency (3,3).

  3. Only two I'm anywheres at all sure of, and neither of them entirely.

Vocations invariably lead to nothing and end careers (4,5)
    [TRUE LOVES] = [invariably=TRUE] [nothing=LOVE][careerS]
My vocation certainly wasn't my "true love," the way I hated it by the time I finally retired!

Are they spoken and heard? (5)
I would guess [ORALS] as a homophone of [OR ALL'S], but how you get from one to the other I don't see.

Off the table when a libertarian start leaves shooting location at the forefront (2,4)
[NO DEAL] = [LIBertarian] [subtracted from] [LIBEL] [NODE] [in front]
I'm sure that's not right. How does libel come from shooting? But I couldn't dream up anything cleaner.

He steals first base, but an internal review leads me to outside agency (3,3).
[THE FBI] I guess, but I can only see parts of it.

Doctor’s instrument will pierce brogue (5)
    [DR] [AWL] = [DRAWL]
