Three from LAT:
At one German place, didn't dine al fresco (3,2)
Ban video-taker that grew up in the heart of Georgia (5)
What might Shakespeare's Dick the Butcher call hanging 2 out of 3 lawyers? (3,2,1,4,5)
Two from ST:
Inserted LED is one source of electric light (6)
Conspiracies influence America's primary intelligence
agency (3)

Here are the solutions to yesterday's clues:
Singer | and | actress Thomas, | who lost her head (4)
[ARLO {guthrie}] [=] [MARLO {thomas}] [without first letter]

[anagram] [HIRE TOW] = [HOT WIRE]
A possible explanation | for | the whore eyes | was voiced (8)
[THEORIZE] [=] [THE WHORE EYES] [homophone]

LAT1: At one German place, didn't dine al fresco (3,2)
ReplyDeleteAchtung! So your German is better than your French!
LAT2: Ban video-taker that grew up in the heart of Georgia (5)
Ah so, a charade reversal…. Must be contagious!
LAT3 What might Shakespeare's Dick the Butcher call hanging 2 out of 3 lawyers? (3,2,1,4,5)
&LIT! Very clever, even though there is only one possible answer in the grid. Vive la revolution!
ST1: Inserted LED is one source of electric light (6)
Bright h-c. "Source" is a bit odd in this context. "Inventor" is too obvious, of course. "creator" or "producer" might have been better.
Conspiracies influence America's primary intelligence
agency (3)
A serious problem here is that "intelligence agency" comprises 2 parts of the abbreviation.
NC
LAT1: yep, I can count all the way up to 1! (I remember it because Alley Oops' Dr. Wonmug was a pun on Einstein.)
ReplyDeleteST1: you're correct, creator or producer would have been good. But he didn't invent, just perfected someone else's invention and then manufactured and sold them.
ST2: that bothered me a bit too, but I rationalized 1) at least it didn't contaminate the cryptic, and 2) the solution was being treated as a word, not an abbreviation, so while etymologically they had the same root, the phrase was not an actual part of the acronym. Still, having the same root would be forbidden for a homophone or double definition, and strongly frowned upon for other types of wordplay.
My set:
ReplyDeleteLAT4: Six wee tenets define eligibility for referendum vote, perhaps (5,7)
LAT5: Refuses to open letters backing movie-star (4,6).
LAT6: And here is Roman morality? (5).
LAT7: Can we force out the candy? (5,5)
LAT8: Tempting direction for variable pair (4).
LAT9: Sane cyanide dispenser induces death by euthanasia, perhaps (4,3,4).
ST3: Sounds like my drinking has brought attention (4,2).
ST4: One who encourages breast-feeding may have the answer (3,3,2).
ST5: Affected sports shoe is recalled for toe replacement (6)
Ah, then I can add:
ReplyDeleteST6: Was he just the frontman backing the developer of the lightbulb? (6)
You're getting garrulous with your clues. Out of 10 today, 7 I get completely, 2 (ST5,6) only partly, and one (ST3) not at all.
ReplyDeleteLAT4: Six wee tenets define eligibility for referendum vote, perhaps (5,7)
Good anagram, define doesn't suggest changing, so not a great indicator.
LAT5: Refuses to open letters backing movie-star (4,6).
I look for reversals and I'm lucky if I can fine one short one!
LAT6: And here is Roman morality? (5).
You're straining my Latin on this one.
LAT7: Can we force out the candy? (5,5)
Anagram with a better indicator.
LAT8: Tempting direction for variable pair (4).
I thought you had ENTICE with West instead of East North, but then I saw that was (5). We'll dress this charade in some lingerie.
LAT9: Sane cyanide dispenser induces death by euthanasia, perhaps (4,3,4).
Smooth if noir surface for this anagram, with another weak indicator.
ST3: Sounds like my drinking has brought attention (4,2).
Only one possibility with the proper numeration, and I SUP or ICE UP would almost fit, but not close enough I fear, nor would the direct quite fit. So I'l have to take a miss on this one.
ST4: One who encourages breast-feeding may have the answer (3,3,2).
Hoookay. Uh, interesting parsing. But legal.
ST5: Affected sports shoe is recalled for toe replacement (6)
The palindrome threw me off, but once I saw past that, well, I still don't see how you indicated L was replacing S, just that something was replacing something else.
ST6: Was he just the frontman backing the developer of the lightbulb? (6)
The direct is obvious, but I don't understand the wordplay.
