Sunday, Sept.21 LAT & ST

Solutions to these clues are in the grids below. Today's Cryptic clues include anagram, charade, hidden, etc.

Three from LAT:

For artificial starship crewman, things are looking up a little bit (4)

Should your goal lie focused on being the first explorer of outer space? (7)

For the overweight, Overeaters Anonymous has the best, except for the start (5)

Two from ST:

Drain swirling to the bottom (5)

Suffragette strides out of hiding for cycle trials (4,5)

BTW, I think it's cute how the blocks in the ST grid form the shape of a dog's face.

  1. A little late. but here are my comments:

LAT1: For artificial starship crewman, things are looking up a little bit (4)

Let’s hope he can finally master contractions.

LAT2: Should your goal lie focused on being the first explorer of outer space? (7)

Nice anag and use of indicator as part of definition.

For the overweight, Overeaters Anonymous has the best, except for the start (5)

I get the answer, but am having trouble parsing the cryptic. Needs to be OE around BES (the well-known Egyptian god….). Overeaters needs to be OE, but where does anonymous come in?

ST1: Drain swirling to the bottom (5)

    No problem, m’dear.

Suffragette strides out of hiding for cycle trials (4,5)

    Nice HC.

LAT5: The foreign craft landed Paris’s increasing selection of the contemptible.

LAT6: Incompetent, but stand to express regret and thank Mum (7)

LAT7: Light source returns with a perfect additional safety measure (6)

LAT8: Is a patriotic sentiment another way to tout the start of western anarchy? (4,1,7)

  3. Got all but the un-numerated one, but gaps in a couple.

LAT4: Because behind this menace stands every third Republic (5).
Tricky acrostic! You learn well, padawan, the People's Republic salutes you!

LAT5: The foreign craft landed Paris’s increasing selection of the contemptible.
I want a flying SAUCEr and the golden APPLE that started Paris's trouble, but AENEAS was also a Trojan, and anyhow I don't see how they would fit. Numeration might have helped.

LAT6: Incompetent, but stand to express regret and thank Mum (7)
I think I see the direct, and RUE "standing", and MA, but think you're using a British meaning of TA that I'm not familiar with.

LAT7: Light source returns with a perfect additional safety measure (6)
    LASER I see, the T I don't see.

LAT8: Is a patriotic sentiment another way to tout the start of western anarchy? (4,1,7)
TOUT W. ANARCHY nice anagram. Do you have a stand-alone program or use a website to find anagrams? I have a couple programs, but keeping an eye out for better sites.
