LAT1: Laughed at the spar Odysseus was bound into (6)
ReplyDeleteSimple HC. Your definition seems a bit off the mark, but I suppose the answer is something that is “laughed at”. I would have preferred a direct definition such as “Imitation of the spar….”
LAT2: Sixth classic car is said to sing beautifully (5)
The cryptic is clear. Learning moment – did not know it was a beautiful singer until I googled it.
LAT3: Abstract dirty paintings (4)
The definition seems clear. OK I think I got it, but it involves making an anagram (pointer is present) of another word (that is not present, but is clued). OK, admittedly not much of an anagram, but still drifting to the 2nd level (?)
ST1: Tropical spot in northeast Virgin Islands (5)
HC. Actually, surprisingly close (wrong direction) to the Virgin Islands. Still very much part of the Commonwealth, with QEII the head of State.
ST2: Briefly, where an acorn would think he was in an afterlife surrounded by squirrels? (2,1,8)
Very cute. Took a while to figure, because I was looking for more charade than a simple (but elegant) reparsing.
4 from me:
ReplyDeleteLAT4: They are clearly able to recall street expression when repeated verbatim (7).
LAT5: Cliché for the commercial era (5).
ST3: What an eager but naïve pheasant might say? (2,4).
ST4: Former President has a go but gains nothing by upending Iranian ass (6).
Correction:
ReplyDeleteLAT4 has 8 letters.
LAT4: They are clearly able to recall street expression when repeated verbatim (8).
ReplyDeleteST.+ OH!, don't know why you added "verbatim"
LAT5: Cliché for the commercial era (5).
Proverbial charade.
ST3: What an eager but naïve pheasant might say? (2,4).
Straightforward double def.
ST4: Former President has a go but gains nothing by upending Iranian ass (6).
REAGAN - A + O up. Nice surface.
